I notice that there's o lot less traffic in this group (~1
post/day)compared to a few years ago, and alt.toys.lego seems totally
dried up. Has Usenet gone totally out of fashion? The only real
alternative is the boards at lego.com, but these are strictly
moderated, poorly organized and has limited retention time.
I considered the lugnet.com forums, but having to pay for membership
was quite a showstopper. It's not so much the amount ($10+/lifetime)
as the priciple, as payment over net is still a bit messy and tends to
exclude kids and casual users. In addition I dislike the idea of
having to pay for what I earlier got here for free (there may be many
reasons to contribute to Lugnet, I'm speaking strictly about posting
access to the boards). Is there any other places worth knowing about?

Most of the discussion on this board has moved to Lugnet. You can read Lugnet
for free. You can also post for free, but it is a very lefthanded (convoluted)
procedure unless you are a member. I'm not a member there either.

You don't have to be a paying member to be able to read and post at lugnet!
I have been using lugnet since it began, but I'm not a paying member.

Just fill in the 'Posting Setup' at http://news.lugnet.com/news/post/setup/
and wait for the confirmation email. It may take a while, be patient, ask
here at rtl for help if you need a message to the admins posted at lugnet.
I'll help you if necessary.

There's also

- FBTB, http://www.fbtb.net/ mostly about Lego and Star Wars
- Classic Castle, http://www.classic-castle.com/ you can guess what it's
about
- http://www.bzpower.com/ mostly about Bionicles
- http://eurobricks.hosting.ipsyn.com/ Eurobricks
- www.legofan.org
- 1000Steine http://www.1000steine.de/forum2/forum.php mostly in German

and so on and on, google for "lego discussion" and "lego forum" and you will
find lots of places.

I'll sign that. Just btw., signing up at LUGNET should speed up
significantly now that LUGNET is being run by a fresh team. We have just
moved to a new (much faster) server, and René (who also runs
1000steine.de) and I (for the hosting and technical part) will take care
that new signups are answered timely.

Looking forward to see you there.

Jerry
